Hiring A Sea Captain.
Most often boat owners can

Rule 1. Always verify that the
captain(s) are licensed. Go to the National Maritime Center Website,
http://www.uscg.mil/nmc/ and then to Credential Verification The captain
will need to give you his document number and last name..
Always request a Sea Captain for a contract. This contract is
confidential. Make sure this contract identifies the financial costs
that you are willing to pay. List all the specific or general work the
captain is required to complete.
Rule 3. In writing, clearly
state your objectives and what you require. Clients should indicate a
start "date - possible end date of a delivery.
Rule 4. If you're
hiring an Sea Captain always, in specific terms require he/she notify
you of the progress of the delivery. This can be done by phone or email.
Rule 5. Upon request and during the delivery, profession Sea
Captains will most likely equip your vessel with their personal GPS
tracking system. This should be a real time GPS system where the owner
can access the internet and located his /her vessel in real time.

Rule 6. Always insist on CONFIDENTIALITY in
regards to your contract. It is unprofessional for any Sea Captain to
give a clients name or personal information to strangers or his friends.
Rule 7. When you sign an "delivery or recovery contract" you are
required to pay the fees in advance. Inquire if their may be addition
fees to include, dockage, fuel, air travel, or other costs.
8. Reliable Sea Captains will never guarantee you that damages will
never occur. But this issues should be discussed by both the captain and
client. Both should agree that certain conditions, weather etc. that the
vessel should/will not be subject to.. i.e. hurricane winds, snow
storms, high sea.
Rule 9. Most professional Sea Captains should
not references their clients' without consent from the client. The sea
captain must get the clients permission and obtain authorization from
the client before their name is used for a recommendation. Do not be
fooled in believing some Sea Captains utilizes a corporate name or
profession person for a reference.
Rule 10. If hired, BEFORE -
DURING - AND AT THE END OF THE SEA VOYAGE, DELIVERY, ask, OR require the
Sea Captain to take a time stamped video or picture of both the exterior
and interior of the vessel. A picture is worth a thousand words and you
want your vessel in an undamaged condition.
